When running water could be powering your home:
Residents of Portland can now generate green energy from the water pipes that connect to their home. By placing small water turbines that take are rotated by the water flowing through them, energy is created and sent to the generator and back into the grid.
This is a massive innovation in the sense that it is the out of the box thinking that creates 2 solutions from one product. If we can find other items that could be easily adapted to do more than just the job it was originally created to do then we will be able to have fewer costs and less infrastructure which relates in cheaper housing and cheaper utilities.
